Rochester Deputy Mayor Arrested for DWI | COTRI7 News

Rochester, N.Y. - The city's deputy mayor has been arrested for driving while intoxicated. New York State Police said around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, troopers stopped Leonard Redon, 62, of Pittsford, for speeding on Interstate 490 near the Clinton Avenue exit. Redon was subsequently arrested for DWI, speeding and having an expired inspection. State police confirmed Redon had a blood-alcohol level of .13 and was driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. He was charged with speeding,
DWI and having an expired inspection sticker. Redon was given appearance tickets to the City of Rochester Court for April 8. An hour-and-a-half after being booked on DWI charges, Redon called Mayor Lovely Warren to apologize and he offered to resign. But after the two met Thursday morning, and Redon informed the mayor he was just diagnosed with diabetes, she agreed to let him take personal time and meet with his doctor. City officials said while that condition isn’t an excuse for the DWI arrest, diabetes can intensify the effects of alcohol. City Communications Director Chris Christopher said Warren is deeply disappointed in Redon’s “lapse of judgment,” but considers his work a value to the city. Redon will take some time off and is expected back at City Hall sometime next week. 13WHAM News received the following statement from the City of Rochester: "Deputy Mayor Redon informed Mayor Warren at approximately 1 a.m. and offered his most sincere apologies to both the Mayor and to the people of Rochester. The Mayor met with Deputy Mayor Redon this morning where they discussed his lapse in judgment and possible resignation. After speaking with the Deputy Mayor and learning of his newly diagnosed medical condition which may have affected his decision-making, they jointly concluded that he should take several of his allotted personal days to seek counseling from his personal physician. The Deputy Mayor has no history of alcoholism or previous arrests for DWI or DUI. This information is not intended to minimize the seriousness of the issue in any way." "While I am very disappointed in this turn of events and the deputy mayor's lapse in judgment, I have accepted his apology," Warren said. "Leonard Redon is a valued member of my team who is doing good work on behalf of the people of Rochester. I know he is sincerely regretful for the embarrassment he has caused for the city, for me and for himself and will take steps to assure that it never happens again. "There is an important lesson for everyone here. Drinking and driving is never an acceptable choice. It puts everyone in danger." City Councilman Adam McFadden said everyone deserves a second chance. While he called Redon’s DWI charges “a monster of a mistake,” he said many other city officials have been charged with DWI and have moved past that. City Corporation Counsel T. Andrew Brown called this a personal matter because Redon was on his own time and was driving his own car. Brown acknowledged this was a serious matter and said the city was taking appropriate action to address it. Redon did not answer the door at his Plymouth Avenue townhouse. His driver’s license indicates he still lives in Pittsford, but city officials said he moved to Rochester because it is a requirement of his job.
